Fall Fishing: Day 2

Day 2: Friday, October 18th

Bob arrived and we set a 7:15am departure time for the point.  The plan was to cast at the surface action so we didn’t stop for any live bait.  Matt and I had seen 2 blitzes in a few hours from the beach the day before.  We figured we would be able to chase them up, down and around the point.  after a full morning of moving around we saw nothing but 6-8 foot swells.  Where was a decent amount of Albie action we weren’t looking to chase and a lot of guys trolling wire, which we didn’t bring… we grabbed ‘lunch’ at star island (which was closed) and decided to regroup.  The seas were getting pretty nuts and there was zero action.  We would head back to plum with green crabs and chum.

After the long rough run back our fish-finder went out and we were left to rely on our recon from the previous day.  After dropping once in close and getting nothing for 15 minutes we made the call to move.  If the togs aint there…they aint there.  In the midst of the move we caught some bluefish surface action.  I called for 3 small guys to be fileted and smoked.  After we hit the quota, we went back to business.  After all, we didn’t come all this way for bluefish.  If the togs aint there…they aint there.  A few minutes into out next spot we started getting some action.  The chum proved to be extremely productive.  We caught 3 togs and a seabass!  Finally reward for recon and persistence.  We headed back, cleaned gutted and fried up some TOG! for dinner.  The girls loved it and we appreciated having something to show for our efforts.

Fall Fishing: Day 1

Had quiet the roller coaster of a week.  After pushing the start of the trip back a day because of some stuff at work we headed out on Wednesday night.

Day 1: Thursday, Oct 16th

Thursday was going to be ‘recon’.  We slept in a bit after getting in around midnight the night before.  After loading up the truck with waders and the surf casting rods we headed east to Montauk.  I knew the drill, check the town beaches, head east to ditch, circle around the point and look down to the north bar from the car, check camp hero cliffs, if nothing drive down to north bar; lather, rinse, repeat.  We were lucky, when we hit the camp hero cliffs at 9:15am the fish were blitzing and looked to be moving west.  It looked like the blitz had been going on for a while and guys were stacked up in front of the frothing water.  I made the call to drive down the dirt path and hit ‘the sewer pipe’.  I figured we would have time to gear up and get a few cast in the water before the fish arrived.  by the time we got our waders on, belted up, and rods out guys were starting to head out.  we got the the beach, fired some casts into the water and gave the equipment a shake down.  After a few casts i started pushing east towards the activity.  As i rounded the point i could see it had ended.  some guys had keepers on the beach.  I grabbed Matt and told him it was time to rinse lather and repeat.  Fish didn’t head west.  Just our luck they wrapped around to ‘Scott’s Hole’ just east of ‘North Bar’.  We could see them from the road.  We spead down the dirt access road blowing over the pothole laden path and jogged over.  We didn’t push far enough.  At the first site of some splashing we fired metal lores into the water.  Off to our right we could see the chaos.  Turns out I was the most courteous man in Montauk that day and my punishment was a cheese burger for dinner.  Those that mugged the original crew were rewarded with bass; shit, by the time they got mugged they were dragging dinner up the beach by the gills and didn’t care.  Lesson learned: find the bass, go to the bass, cast at the bass.  “One-More-Cast” Matty hooked up to a shorty bass that was a fat 26 inches.  Had to send him back along with the bluefish that was most likely responsible for the initial distracting splash.  On the way out we ran across “buck-Tail-Billy” who had gotten to the scene early and had a nice keeper.  All the action died out and we still had an afternoon ahead of us.  we picked up some sandwiches, Herb’s Fried Chicken and green crabs (for the Togs) on our way out of town.

Recon north of Plum Island Continued after lunch, as did our PETA approved fishing.  usually you anchor up on a rock pile for togs but this was recon and we didn’t know where to do.  so after resetting the anchor a few times i figured, WTF lets just drift and we will find where the togs are.  This kinda worked and as we passed over some structure we would get hit then go it again.  all we got where shorts but we learned and after all it was a con day.  we headed home at sunset ‘happy’ we weren’t burdened with cleaning fish.  we then spent the next hour finding a restaurant that was open for dinner…

A Little Vermont Adventure

We snuck up to Vermont for a quick weekend recon mission.  The weather was spectacular and so was the foliage.  speaking of foliage we have Bear Mountain Oktoberfest coming up followed by 7 days of fishing on the east end.  Hopefully the moon will pull up and acre of bass.

Light Tackle

Picked up an Orvis Light Tackle Combo set.  Includes interchangable base sections that can either be for a caster or a fly reel.  Pretty nifty.  It is LIGHT.  Hopefully it performs well on Lac Papineau.

Solar is pretty cool…

I picked up some cool solar gear.  Its a 4 panel ANKER system that puts out 14 amps.  I have one small ANKER battery and I am extremely pleased with it.  I picked up a 10,000 mAH and a 20,000 mAH battery.  I’m going to add this to the gear I test out in Canada when we are off grid.  The solar rig can only charge batteries via 5v input so it will only work with the 10,000mAH battery.  My plan is to bring them both charges.  The I will run down the smaller one first and start recharging it with the solar system.  The larger battery is just going to be a bank to draw down till its dead.  Both are surprisingly compact and light.  The Anker solar set up can also charge devices directly. I put this to the test while I was at work today.  I was able to charge my ipad about half way.  It went from 24% to 71% over the course of the day with the solar panels hanging in my south facing window.  Not too shabby.  Combined with the ability to store power in the 10,000 mAH external battery I think this is a great back up system for basic power.

Rainy Day Ribs/Chicken/Brisket

Katie and I header out to East Hampton for a weekend with the family.  The forecast called for rain, rain, and rain so we defrosted some ribs and fired up the Lang Saturday morning. We also threw in some small briskets and later some chicken.  I used a lot of apple during this cook to keep the smoke flavor mild.  I also wrapped earlier than ussual.  about two and a half hours into it.  It worked out well, meat came out very tender, flavorful and not overly smokey.

New Gadget – DeLorme inReach SE

https://share.delorme.com/JohnMagovern#

I have be researching satellite communication for quite some time. There have been three key instances where I have felt vulnerable and in this day and age it just isn’t necessary to be in that position. First was hurricane sandy where the power went out and thus the cell towers were down. Boom. Biggest city in the greatest country and you are cut off. Second was a rouge wave swamp our boat in Tortola. It was pretty terrifying and I often think ‘had it been worst what would I have done?’ The answer is scarier than the actual incident. We would be helpless. Cell phone would be wet and we would wait. Third experience was my time in Canada. While it’s nice being unplugged, it’s reassuring to know that you can pull up you true location and get a emergency message out just incase. The
